A little Toowoomba Art Trail haul… because apparently I am completely incapable of visiting artists’ studios without bringing something home.

I already have SO much art in my house — my own work and originals I’ve collected from other artists — and wall space is becoming a rather precious commodity. But original art is basically catnip to me. I just can’t help myself.

Our first stop was Janine Cotter Artist, one of the founders of the trail, and I made my first purchase almost immediately. David and I both fell in love with this beautiful pastel of blue and lavender hydrangeas. It’s so restful and peaceful, and we’re going to hang it in our bedroom. I don’t own anything quite like it, either in medium or style, which made it feel like a really lovely addition to our collection.

Next came this fabulous little concrete cat from Dazel. Bright, quirky and full of personality, he immediately reminded me of Arthur, so obviously he had to come home as a little studio friend.

And finally, Deutsche Ceramic, where I picked up two gorgeous handmade mugs and a brooch — and had a fascinating conversation about her French artist residency, which may have planted a few ideas in my head…

And that was it.

I think.

Hydrangeas. Cat. Mugs. Brooch.

Very restrained, really.

One of my favourite things about buying directly from artists is that you don’t just bring home an object. You bring home the story of where you found it, who made it and the conversation you had along the way.

A very successful day of supporting fellow creatives — that’s my excuse anyway.

A little creative escape to Toowoomba…

We left Brisbane after art class on Friday night and headed two hours up the road to Toowoomba. A lovely mooch around the city, curry for dinner, drinks on the rooftop of the old bank and, of course, recorded day 4/Sketchtember drawing before bed.

This morning we walked off the curry around the parklands, which are already looking absolutely stunning in preparation for the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers later this month. Not everything is quite in bloom yet, but there was still so much colour — daffodils, bluebells, foxgloves, daisies… honestly, it felt like being back home in England for a moment. Gorgeous.

Then it was time to hit the Toowoomba art trail.

There are 20 locations on the trail, and we were never going to manage all of them in one day, but we gave it a pretty good go! I’ll tag all the wonderful studios and artists we managed to visit because there was so much talent, generosity and creativity along the way.

A special shout out to Jeanne Cotter and Cindy MacDonald, two of the incredible women behind starting the trail. Now in its fourth year, it just keeps getting bigger and better, and it was so lovely to meet you both.

Thank you to every artist who welcomed us into their space and gave us their time. I particularly loved chatting with Sandra Miller and Catherine Keaton’s husband about their artistic adventures in Italy. Very inspiring indeed… watch this space!

And now, roof down, beautiful countryside ahead of us and a lovely drive back to Brisbane.

A little creative escape to Toowoomba…

We left Brisbane after art class on Friday night and headed two hours up the road to Toowoomba. A lovely mooch around the city, curry for dinner, drinks on the rooftop of the old bank and, of course, recorded day 4/Sketchtember drawing before bed.

This morning we walked off the curry around the parklands, which are already looking absolutely stunning in preparation for the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers later this month. Another little art hack: how to properly clean and dry your paintbrushes.

When cleaning your brushes, use warm soapy water and gently work the bristles into the palm of your hand. This helps open them up and get any leftover paint out from inside the brush.

Once they’re clean, gently pinch and reshape the bristles before leaving them to dry. This helps your brushes keep their shape and last longer.

We dry ours bristle-side up in cutlery trays so they have plenty of space between them. Just make sure they’re not packed tightly together and still have room to dry properly.

Such a simple thing, but looking after your brushes properly can make a huge difference.

Day four of Sketchtember and the prompt was MOMENT.

This was my moment from yesterday.

After dinner with my husband in Toowoomba, we walked back through the main street past the beautiful old courthouse. It was all lit up, the gardens were planted ready for the flower festival, and I spotted these gorgeous little cherub statues.

I took a photo, came back to the hotel and at 10pm sat down and sketched my moment from the day.

And we have a winner! Lady J Andrea, this little drawing will be making its way to you.

Today’s word is PATTERN. I have absolutely no idea what I’m going to draw yet. It depends where I go, what I see and what inspires me.

Day four of Sketchtember and the prompt was MOMENT.

This was my moment from yesterday.

We stayed overnight in Toowoomba ready to hit the Toowoomba art trail today, I didn’t sleep brilliantly, I’m out of my normal environment and apparently I’ve forgotten how phones, dates and going Live actually work.

I couldn’t get the camera the right way around, I got flustered about what day it was, poor David got roped in to press buttons and there’s probably a great big empty bit at the end while we tried to work out whether we’d actually turned it off.

Apologies. But this is real life, people. Take us as you find us.

ANYWAY… DAY FIVE.

Today’s word is PATTERN.

And this is such a brilliant one because pattern can be absolutely anything.

Look around you.
A teapot.
Fabric.
Flowers.
Leaves.
Tiles.
Wallpaper.
Architecture.
Nature.

Break what you see down into shapes, lines and repetition and suddenly you have pattern.

Or completely make it up.
Doodle.
Zentangle.
Create shapes.
Repeat marks.
Play with colour.

And for anyone thinking, “But I can’t draw” — THIS ONE IS FOR YOU. You absolutely can create pattern.

Also, yes, it’s called Sketchtember, but there are no art police here. Want to add paint? Do it. Collage? Absolutely. Mixed media? Heck yes, baby, let’s go.

This is about creating, not following rules.

I genuinely can’t quite believe it. It feels like only yesterday I was painting 7,000 dots, and today this little creative corner has somehow grown to 14,000 followers.

Carve out 10, 15 or 20 minutes today and give your brain a little creative break.

Creating is meditative. It’s expressive. It uses imagination and invention. And it gives that creative side of your brain a chance to actually do some work — something we don’t always make enough time for when so much of our day is spent organising, analysing, planning and problem-solving.

So draw. Doodle. Sketch. Don’t overthink it. Just enjoy your moment.

FYI, I’m off to Toowoomba tonight because hubby and I are heading around Toowoomba Open Studios tomorrow, so tomorrow morning’s Sketchtember Live will be coming to you from my hotel room. That should be interesting.

So I decided to pay a little tribute to Oggy, my old Siamese fighting fish and once-upon-a-time U Create studio pet. (Oggy means pasty in Cornish, by the way.)

There was actually Oggy 1, Oggy 2 and Oggy 3. Sadly, none of them are with us anymore.

And then came the day I went to clean the fish tank and THE BOTTOM FELL OUT. Water everywhere. Studio floor flooded. Fish disaster.

And that, my friends, was the end of having fish in the art studio.

So here’s my little homage to the Oggys.

Absolutely — I’d make this one feel nostalgic and genuine, because it’s such a lovely part of the studio’s history.

Throwback Thursday is back… and today I’m finally sharing the online art gallery I promised!

A couple of weeks ago I shared a Throwback Thursday from 2020, when Daisy and I were running free online art sessions during lockdown. We were drawing Frida Kahlo together, and I said to stay tuned because I’d share some of the amazing artwork people sent in from those sessions.

Well… today is the day!

These are just some of the wonderful people who tuned in, created along with us and sent through their finished pieces. We had people joining from Brisbane, all around Australia, England, Abu Dhabi, South America, Holland, Swedeen, and so many places in between.

Looking back at these photos now, it really reminds me just how important those little online sessions became. They gave us something creative to focus on, a reason to connect and, hopefully, a little bit of positivity during a pretty dark and scary time…..and the confidence for me to go on camera!!

So enjoy the gallery, and let me know if you spot yourself! And if you were one of the people who joined us back then and you’re still hanging around here… thank you. It honestly means so much.

How do you measure success after an exhibition or Open Studios / Art trail?

Sales? Of course.
But sales are only one part of the story.

Art is personal.
Your style won’t appeal to everyone, and even when someone LOVES a piece, buying original art is often an investment. They need to think about where it will go, whether it works in their home, whether their partner likes it, whether the budget allows for it right now.

And sometimes they simply need time.

Since Open Studios finished, I’ve sold a piece someone viewed over the weekend and had an enquiry about a commission inspired by my new botanical series.

So I think we need to look beyond what went through the till on the day.

The conversations.
The new connections.
The people who discovered your work.
The feedback.
The commissions.
The future opportunities. And what you learnt about your own art by watching people interact with it.

Some of the seeds you plant at an exhibition haven’t grown yet.

Sales matter. But they’re not the only measure of artistic success and you know what if you are an artist and creator out showcasing the public area you are successful - it takes bravery to put yourself out there so well done!!

Day 3 of 30 of Sketchtember and I’m LOVING seeing all your drawings popping up in the comments.

What I love most is how differently everyone interprets the same word. Different ideas, different styles, different materials — which is exactly the point.

And remember, you can sketch with anything. A regular graphite pencil, coloured pencils, charcoal, pen… there are no rules here.

A sketch is simply a quick, freehand drawing that captures an idea, object or moment without needing all the detail. Loose. Unpolished. Not overthought.

That’s what we’re aiming for.

A little creative brain break in your day. A chance to exercise that creative side of your brain, switch off from everything else for a moment and just enjoy making something.

And the daily words? They’re simply there to give you somewhere to start, rather than staring at a blank piece of paper thinking, “What on earth am I going to draw?”

So… today’s word is:

FISHY.

Fishy business?
Fish and chips?
Fish in the ocean?
A goldfish in a bowl?
Or something completely different?

And remember, you can sketch with anything. A regular graphite pencil, coloured pencils, charcoal, pen… there are no rules here.

A sketch is simply a quick, freehand drawing that captures an idea, object or moment without needing all the detail. Loose. Unpolished. Not overthought.

That’s what we’re aiming for.

A little creative brain break in your day. A chance to exercise that creative side of your brain, switch off from everything else for a moment and just enjoy making something.

And the daily words? They’re simply there to give you somewhere to start, rather than staring at a blank piece of paper thinking, “What on earth am I going to draw?”

So… today’s word is:

FISHY.

Fishy business?
Fish and chips?
Fish in the ocean?
A goldfish in a bowl?
Or something completely different?

I cannot wait to see where you take this one.

Day two of Sketchtember and today’s prompt is HIDDEN.

I took a slightly different angle with this one.

I drew a very loose, ambiguous self-portrait. There are a couple of clues that it’s me — the curly, wavy hair and, of course, the funky avocado earring.

But then across my face I started writing pieces of my story. Things from my younger years. Parts of my history that you wouldn’t know simply by looking at me.

And that became my interpretation of hidden.

Every day we walk around talking, working, laughing, creating and interacting with people. They see the version of us that we present to the world.

But underneath that is this whole hidden tapestry of experiences. Our history. The things that have shaped us. The good bits, the difficult bits, the things we’ve overcome and the things we might still be carrying.

We all wear a mask to some degree.

And perhaps those hidden parts of ourselves only become visible when we feel safe enough to let our guard down and share them.

So that’s my take on HIDDEN.

Today’s Creative Spotlight is a special shout-out to a dear friend and fellow local creative, Kirstie Page from Remember When Art @rememberwhenart

Kirstie is a visual artist and enamelist, and when she first shared these earrings on Instagram a couple of weeks ago, I immediately thought: THEY are very me.

They’re called Ripple, which I love anyway, but it was the fact that they’re not perfectly uniform that really caught my eye. Each one feels individual and slightly different. Then there was the colour — beautiful aqua with these gorgeous deep blue pools running through them. Sold.

I went looking for them during Open Studios on Sunday, with the profits from my own art sales already burning a hole in my pocket, but couldn’t find the pair I’d seen. So I messaged Kirsty and, lovely human that she is, she popped round yesterday with the right ones.

And here they are. My newest earrings….you know I’m obsessed BUT THESE are so much more these are a little piece of wearable art.

Because art doesn’t have to hang on a wall. It can be something we wear, use, hold, sit on, drink from or surround ourselves with every day.
