Day 1 of Holiday Art Club completed!!

Our first day was all about creating a glowing jungle world, with a full day of painting, printing, cutting, layering and plenty of experimenting.

We started with our jungle paintings, creating the backgrounds before moving on to watercolour toadstools and forest floors. The kids could make their jungles completely their own, adding anything from giant toadstools to little fairy houses.

While our paintings were drying, we headed outside to collect flowers and plants from around the studio. We then jelly printed them onto neon paper, creating colourful leaves and flowers to add to our jungle artworks.

Once everything was dry, we cut out our pieces and layered them together to create a 3D jungle collage. Then came the best part — putting them under blue light and watching all the neon colours glow.

We also created bright neon fireflies and finished the day with our very own blue light torches to take home. Naturally, we had to experiment with a little neon face paint too.

A full day of creativity, colour and a whole lot of glowing artwork.

Day 21 of Sketchtember! Gosh, we are officially on the home straight now, and today’s word is BUBBLE.

I wasn’t quite sure where I was going with this one until I looked around the studio and spotted my pop-art standard lamp. It’s covered in fabulous comic-style images, including someone blowing bubble gum, and I thought… YES. That’s it.

So I got old ChatGPT involved, merged a photo of me into a pop-art style image, added a great big bubble of bubble gum — and then, of course, made it POP!

I also wanted to change up my materials again. We’ve had watercolours, pencils, pens, charcoal and all sorts so far, so today I pulled out the alcohol markers. They give you that really intense, punchy colour that is absolutely perfect for pop art.

And I LOVE how it’s turned out. POP!

I had the loveliest little commission recently from a friend of a friend, who wanted something special to celebrate her relationship anniversary.

Her idea was so cute — could I represent her and her boyfriend as their favourite drinks, holding hands?

His drink of choice: Guinness.
Hers: a limoncello fizz.

I absolutely loved the creative challenge of bringing these two characters to life. I added a few little details of my own — sparkly watercolour on the Guinness froth and mint leaf, plus a clutch bag, bracelet and some rather fabulous shoes.

Honestly, they’re adorable.

And this is one of the things I love about commissions. Creating to a brief, knowing exactly who it’s for and why it matters, makes the finished artwork that little bit more special.

Day 20/30 of Sketchtember and today’s word was BRIDGE.

So at twilight, I grabbed my sketchbook and went for a little walk down the creek with my husband to Walton Bridge here in The Gap.

I took my little stool — made by my son in his Design Technology class — found myself a spot underneath the bridge and sat sketching as the light slowly disappeared.

And then the bats came.

And, to be fair, I’m a bit scared of bats. So once it got properly dark, that was enough plein-air sketching for me!

We headed to the pub where my daughter was working, I ordered a drink, pulled the sketchbook back out and finished my bridge from the safety of the pub.

Such a simple, lovely way to end the weekend. A walk, a sketch, a bit of time together and an artwork to remember it by.

And I really like my little bridge.

After a VERY big day yesterday (you’ll have to watch my other reel to see exactly how stressful it was!), I treated myself to a little lie-in this morning… hence why I’m still here in my pyjamas.

But we’re back!

Thank you for continuing to send me your artwork. It genuinely warms my inbox seeing all your DMs flooding in with your brilliant drawings. I absolutely love seeing what you create from each word.

Yesterday’s word was SMOKE, and I did exactly what I’d hinted at — reached for the charcoal. Charcoal is burnt wood, so it felt like the perfect material. I kept it really simple with an extinguished candle and just played with that lovely flow of smoke curling upwards.

And the winner is… @Kstringy99! I know you’ve already won one, so congratulations — number two is heading your way!

Today’s word is…

BRIDGE.

After running two birthday parties today, my inspiration came from that little moment after the birthday girl blows out her candles — that sudden whoosh of smoke curling and billowing upwards.

So I kept this one simple: an extinguished candle and its trail of smoke.

And for an extra little layer, I drew it in charcoal — essentially burnt wood. It felt like the perfect medium for today’s word.

Just a 15-minute sketch, but I really love this one. I’d forgotten how much I enjoy working with charcoal, and it’s definitely made me want to get it out more often.

What a day…… In 20 years of running my business, I’ve never had this happen before. And I’ll be honest im the quiet, now sat on my own all guests gone reflecting I’m quite teary.

I had two birthday parties booked today — one in the morning, one in the afternoon.
Except my afternoon party arrived this morning.

Cue that horrible sick-to-your-stomach moment.

The actual morning party was already setting up, in meantime when the diary clash was evident we were juggling a birthday girl crying in the car, Mum had a little baby, all their guests were arriving and I was frantically checking emails, texts and confirmations while trying to look calm and professional.

Everything in writing confirmed the afternoon booking, including the 2pm receipt, but somewhere along the line there had been a misunderstanding.

Options were offered and the client decided to come back in the afternoon — but everyone was told 1pm instead of 2pm.

That gave me exactly 20 minutes to finish one party, clean, restock, reset and make the studio look like nobody had been there.

Thank goodness my husband dropped everything and came to help.

We did it.

The birthday girl got her party, I gave her a birthday present and gave the family 50% off for the inconvenience.

And now I’m exhausted, emotionally wrung out and have basically worked for nothing today.

But that’s small business sometimes.

You can have all the systems, confirmations and organisation in the world and something can still go spectacularly pear-shaped.

And when it does, you don’t get to disappear and let someone else sort it out.

You ARE the someone else.

So you smile, problem-solve, clean like a lunatic, make sure a little girl still has a lovely birthday party…

And then, when everyone’s gone home, you have a little cry. Twenty years in business and still having new experiences.

Today can officially get in the bin.

Day 18 of Sketchtember!

You’ve caught me out in the art garden this morning because I’m setting up for two birthday parties today — fairy garden this morning and ballet this afternoon. So it’s all hands to the pump!

But first, yesterday’s drawing…

The prompt was tea or coffee, and I drew a little snapshot of my Friday morning coffee with my husband. A takeaway coffee from our friendly local grocer, brought home, popped into a proper mug and enjoyed with a croissant.

Full disclosure: I actually drew it at 10pm last night and spent about 10 minutes on it. So it really is a sketch in the sketchiest sense!

The ellipse on the top of my cup is a bit wonky. There’s something slightly dodgy happening with the handle. And you know what? That’s okay.

Because Sketchtember isn’t really about what you create. It’s about the fact that you ARE creating.

Things will be wonky. Things won’t always work. Mistakes are part of learning, people — and I’m absolutely okay with that.

Day 18 of 30 for Sketchtember, and today’s word was tea or coffee.

This one was a quickie, took me maybe 10–12 minutes. It really is just a little snapshot of a moment in time, but I think that’s the point.

Creativity doesn’t always need half an hour, an hour, or an entire afternoon. Sometimes ten minutes is enough to stop, draw, switch off from the busy day and give yourself a tiny moment of creative wellness.

And I got fresh coffee and a croissant out of it, so win-win really.

Back to Basics: Watercolours — Part 2!

This one is all about my favourite shiny, sparkly watercolours. You know when your painting just needs a little bit of extra glisten? These are the ones I reach for.

I’ve got three different types to show you, and they’re all pretty reasonably priced.

The first is actually from a $2 shop type of place — I think it was Bargain City or somewhere similar. They’re surprisingly good for adding a little bit of sparkle to your watercolour or even over a regular painting. The downside is, because they’re so cheap, you don’t get a huge amount of product.

The second set is from Kmart. I’ve had these for a few years now and they’re really handy to have in the studio.

And then my latest one is a set from Zart. These are one of their newer sets and I really love the creamy colours and the sparkle range.

So if you want to add a little bit of shine to your artwork without spending a fortune, these are definitely worth having a look at.

The first is actually from a $2 shop type of place — I think it was Bargain City or somewhere similar. They’re surprisingly good for adding a little bit of sparkle to your watercolour or even over a regular painting. The downside is, because they’re so cheap, you don’t get a huge amount of product.

The second set is from Kmart. I’ve had these for a few years now and they’re really handy to have in the studio.

And then my latest one is a set from Zart. These are one of their newer sets and I really love the creamy colours and the sparkle range.

So if you want to add a little bit of shine to your artwork without spending a fortune, these are definitely worth having a look at.

Here I am, officially lost in the jungle of boxes and materials that have arrived ready for Holiday Art Club!

We’ve got canvases, clay, paint, sparkly bits, weird and wonderful stuff and ALL those extra trims and treasures the kids love. Now I just need to unpack it all and get everything ready to kick off on Monday.

Four or five of our classes have already SOLD OUT, but if you haven’t booked yet, you’re not too late. We still have some half-day and full-day spaces available across the two weeks.

And there really is something for everyone — Paint Your Pet, slime, puppet making, Junk Journaling, plus our Paint Together session where you can come along with a friend, parent or someone special and create together.

Prices are the same as last holidays: $45 half day or $90 full day.

Just book your spot, send the kids with a hat and morning or afternoon tea, and we’re good to go. Easy.

The studio is about to get VERY creative.

You know I LOVE a creative spotlight — and today we’re talking a slightly different kind of creativity… creativity for the taste buds.

Meet Amy from @thepaddingtonpantry

Amy is a fellow kick-ass female business owner and was one of the Lord Mayor’s Women in Business Grant recipients in 2025 alongside me. @brisbanebusinesshub - I’m a huge believer that when local women are out there building brilliant businesses and creating cool stuff, we should shout about it.

I featured Amy’s jams recently after buying a few (can confirm: DELICIOUS), but she’s also been busy collecting a whole bunch of rosettes and ribbons at the @theekka AND has relocated Paddington Pantry from Enoggera back to Paddington, with a gorgeous little retail space on Given Terrace.

So Daisy and I popped in today because Amy has just launched THREE new cocktail glass toppers:

Spicy Marge — chilli, salty, sweet and made for a margarita.

Zesty Besties — zingy lemon and lime goodness. Margarita, gin… experiment away!

Watermelon Sugar High — sweet, summery and basically begging for a gorgeous summer cocktail.

Daisy even grabbed some as a gift, which I think is such a great idea.

So here’s today’s creative spotlight: a clever local woman, making fabulous products, winning awards and growing her business.

Day 18/30 Sketchtember
Word today is tea or coffee

Day 18 and yep… another Friday rolls around!

I don’t have a huge amount to say today. I’m just going to do the day job, so let’s get straight into it.

First up, yesterday’s beautiful unicorn girl, Betty, is heading off to @intrepidshilpa! Congratulations! I absolutely loved drawing her, so I hope you enjoy having her at your house.

And today’s word is… TEA OR COFFEE.

You could take this anywhere — a cup of tea, a teapot, coffee beans, your coffee break, your favourite mug, or even play around with the words and lettering themselves.

Of course, I already drew my cup of tea on Day 1 for “Beginning”, so I’m going to have to get my thinking cap on for this one!

And one little Friday favour from me…

I’m doing Sketchtember completely free because I genuinely want to build this lovely creative community and spread a bit more creativity around. So if you’re enjoying it, perhaps today you could share my page or Sketchtember with someone you think might enjoy joining us.

I don’t have a huge amount to say today. I’m just going to do the day job, so let’s get straight into it.
