You are invited to U Create Art Studio for The 5th Annual Gap Creative Open Studios!

At the end of August, we will be throwing open the studio doors and welcoming five fabulous local artists to exhibit their work at U Create Art.

Because our studio is located in the basement of The Gap Baptist Church, we will ONLY be open on Friday evening and Saturday.

- Friday 28 August | 6:00–9:00 pm
Join us for a relaxed evening of art, music, drinks and nibbles while you wander through a beautiful collection of original artwork. Expect paintings, illustrations, sculpture, ceramics, woodwork and so much more. It’s the perfect opportunity to meet the artists, chat about their work, and soak up the creative atmosphere.

- Saturday 29 August | 10:00 am–3:00 pm
Bring the whole family along! We’ll have FREE kids’ craft in the garden, a few fun surprises throughout the day, and everyone is invited to contribute to our Big Gap Community Installation by creating a tiny self-portrait to become part of a collaborative artwork.

Whether you’re an art lover, looking for a fun family outing, or simply curious to see what our incredible local creatives have been making, we’d love to welcome you into the studio.

One of the best things about our stop-motion classes is that the students are given complete creative freedom. From clay and LEGO to cardboard, paint and recycled materials, they’re encouraged to use whatever inspires them to bring their ideas to life.

Every animation tells a different story, and that’s what makes this class so special. The imagination, problem-solving and creativity on display never cease to amaze us!

7,000 followers! - Well… this just happened.

I have just woke up at 2 a.m., wandered to the bathroom, checked my phone… and there it was.
7,000. I honestly can’t stop smiling.

I knew this milestone was coming, so on Saturday night I created something special to celebrate with you all. I didn’t want to just hold up a sign that said “7,000”. I wanted to represent every single person who has chosen to be part of this colourful little community.

So I painted 7,000 individual dots. One dot for every follower.In my head, I thought it would take about an hour. Instead, I was still at the studio after 11 p.m., four and a half hours later, carefully counting every single dot. Every 100 was tallied, every 1,000 checked, because I wanted to make sure there were exactly 7,000.

And you know what? It was absolutely worth it.

That painting will now hang in The Nook as a reminder of this incredible milestone and of every single one of you who has supported my creative journey. Whether you’ve been here from the beginning or you’ve only just discovered my page… thank you.

Yes, 7,000 is a big number. But to me, it’s never just been about the number. It’s about the individual comments that make me smile.
The messages that brighten my day.
The shares that help someone else discover creativity. The encouragement you’ve given me to keep showing up.

Every single one of you matters.

One last Holiday Art Club class to catch up on, and it was one of my absolute favourites
Stop Motion Animation! 🎥

This workshop sells out every single holidays, and it’s easy to see why.

I always try to set the students up for success, so before they even arrive, I’ve transformed the studio into ten mini animation stations. With animation booths, iPads mounted on tripods, and tables overflowing with paper, Posca pens, Lego, modelling materials and crafty bits and pieces, they have everything they need to let their imaginations run wild.

The morning is all about designing characters, building props and creating backdrops. Then, in the afternoon, the magic begins as they photograph, animate and edit their own mini movies.

What I love most is that there’s no theme.
Every student starts with a blank canvas, and every single animation ends up completely different. Different stories, different characters, different ideas… and that’s exactly how creativity should be.

A beautiful winter sun - Sunday - Funday

Today I swapped the studio for the Samford Show, and honestly, I love a good country show. Homemade jams, cakes, farm animals, log chopping, local produce, and galleries full of incredible art, craft and photography… what’s not to love?

The absolute highlight was seeing one of my teen art students win multiple categories with artwork she’s created both at school and here at U Create Art Studio. Watching young artists back themselves and have their work recognised is such a special feeling. I couldn’t be prouder.

As the sponsor of one of the photography categories, it was also wonderful to support our local creative community and celebrate the amazing talent we have right here in our backyard.

We finished the day with a trip to the cinema to watch Toy Story 5— glass of Sav Blanc and salty popcorn … the perfect ending to a gorgeous Sunday.

Honestly, I think this says everything about why I do what I do.
After teaching a six-hour Holiday Art Club workshop, I could have sat down with a cup of tea and put my feet up. Instead… I made this little guy. 🐌💙
We’d had Turbo playing in the background while the kids were finishing their clay creations, and so many of them made snails that by the end of the day I couldn’t resist making one myself.
Meet my little Turbo! I absolutely love him. He’s got so much character, and now I’m half tempted to make the whole gang!
People often ask where I get my ideas from. The truth is, I never really switch off. I’m happiest when I’m creating. Whether I’m teaching, experimenting with new materials, or making something just because it makes me smile… that’s my happy place.
Now tell me… should I make the rest of the Turbo crew? 🐌✨

That’s a wrap on our Holiday Art Club!

We finished the holidays with an action-packed Creepy Crawlies Day, and what an incredible way to end two weeks of creativity!

Our young artists started by designing their own giant creepy crawlies before using the @itschompshop to safely cut them from cardboard. They then sculpted amazing insects and bugs from clay, adding loads of personality and detail to each one.

After lunch, it was time to bring their giant cardboard creations to life with paint before finishing the day with a beautiful Fireflies in a Jar canvas painting.

The creativity, confidence and imagination these students have shown over the past two weeks has been incredible. We couldn’t be prouder of everything they’ve created, and it’s been such a joy watching each young artist grow.

A huge thank you to all the families who joined us these holidays—we’ve loved every minute!

Holiday Art Club may be over, but the creativity doesn’t stop here... stay tuned for all the exciting projects, classes and artwork coming up throughout the term!

Creative Spotlight | 49 Incredible Artists

Today’s Creative Spotlight isn’t just one artist… it’s 49 incredible artists.

I’m shining a light on the exhibitors in the ATA26 Art Teachers Exhibition – Stories We Tell, currently showing at the Woolloongabba Art Gallery until 18 July.

This exhibition is a beautiful celebration of creativity, featuring everything from paintings and printmaking to sculpture and installation. The diversity of styles, stories and techniques is inspiring, and there’s truly something that will capture everyone’s imagination.

But what makes this exhibition even more special is who these artists are.

They are Queensland’s art teachers.

The people who quietly turn up every day to inspire the next generation of creatives. The ones who encourage children to take risks, solve problems, think differently and discover confidence through making. They don’t just teach art—they nurture creativity.

As someone who has spent my career teaching art, I know just how much work goes into it. I chose to build my own studio rather than work within the school system because I knew the demands of classroom teaching, the administration and the endless responsibilities weren’t for me. That’s why I have enormous respect for those who do it every single day.

Despite everything they juggle, these teachers continue to create their own artwork, explore new ideas, experiment with new techniques and keep growing as artists themselves. Our students are all the richer for it.

I’m incredibly honoured that one of my own lino prints, Cheeky Cocky, has been selected for this exhibition. To have my work hanging alongside so many talented artists is both humbling and a genuine privilege.

So straight after a six-hour Holiday Art Club workshop, I found out that one of my artworks had been accepted into the Queensland Art Teachers Association Annual Teachers Exhibition.

The only catch? It had to be at the gallery today by 5pm… and my workshop didn’t finish until 4pm.

Cue the mad dash across Brisbane, covered in paint, hair resembling I’d gone six rounds with Mike Tyson, and looking anything but gallery-ready!

But we made it.

My lino print, Cheeky Cocky, has officially been delivered, and I’m absolutely thrilled to be exhibiting alongside so many talented art educators.

Next week I’ll also be presenting a workshop at the QATA annual Conference, so it’s shaping up to be a pretty exciting week. Feeling incredibly grateful to be part of such a creative community.

Monster Madness was an absolute hit!

Yesterday, our young artists transformed simple materials into incredible 3D monster creations.

We started by using builder’s expanding foam on cardboard, watching it grow and harden into the perfect monster base. Once it had set, we painted it, added colourful carpet backgrounds, and brought our monsters to life with air-dry clay, antennae, Styrofoam balls, googly eyes and all sorts of fun bits and pieces from around the studio.

No two monsters were the same, and that’s what made this project so much fun! The creativity and imagination on display were incredible, and we absolutely love how every single monster has its own unique personality.

Today’s prep is all about Monster Faces… and I think I’ve just discovered a new favourite art material!

I’ve been wanting to try this technique for ages after spotting it on Instagram, and today was finally the day. Cardboard bases, a can of expanding builder’s foam… and then you just let it do its thing.

Honestly, you have zero control over it. It has a mind of its own, squelching, bubbling and expanding into the most gloriously weird, gnarly textures. Which, for monster faces… is absolutely perfect!

It isn’t the cheapest material, and it definitely needs to be used outside (it’s a bit whiffy!), plus it takes about an hour and a half to harden, so I have to prep these before the kids arrive. But wow… it is SO satisfying to watch.

This is my first time using it, and I can already tell it won’t be my last.

Keep an eye out because I’ll share the finished monster faces in my next reel… and I think you’re going to love them!

Monster Mayhem at Holiday Art Club!

Today was the penultimate day of our Holiday Art Club, and the name definitely lived up to the hype… there was a little bit of Monster Mayhem!

Along with creating some wonderfully weird monsters, we added a little bit of magic to the studio…
“It’s not Leviosa, it’s Leviosaaa!” 🪄

Today was the penultimate day of our Holiday Art Club, and the name definitely lived up to the hype… there was a little bit of Monster Mayhem!

Along with creating some wonderfully weird monsters, we added a little bit of magic to the studio…

What a fantastic day of creativity!

Morning Session: Axolotls!
Our students painted adorable axolotls on canvas, sculpted their own clay axolotls, completed a step-by-step drawing, and even took home a mini 3D-printed axolotl to finish off the theme!

Afternoon Session: Paint Your Pet
One of our most rewarding (and challenging!) classes. Students learned that painting fur is about so much more than using one colour—it’s all about layering tones, creating texture and building depth to bring their furry friends to life.

We’re so proud of how every student challenged themselves and the incredible artwork they created. Just look at these masterpieces!
