Ah, Christmas! MY FAVORITE TIME OF THE YEAR……”and I shall tell you for why” – Yes that is a cheeky nod to the Gavin & Stacey Christmas special coming out on Xmas Day on the BBC….A MUST SEE….lol
Christmas is tricky for me in Australia as I’m used to frosty mornings, log fires, mulled wine and winter wonderlands. But so much across the world is the same, twinkling lights, cheeky mince pies, and a whole lot of wrapping paper chaos!!. We all know the magic of unwrapping a gift that someone carefully chose just for us. But you know what’s even more magical? The joy of giving to others—and I am 100% a GIVER, I just love to give my support, time, gifts, share the love or pressies.
BTW, I’m not saying you should skip the fun of giving Granny her annual bath bomb bath set. But let’s take a moment to think beyond the commercial gifts. Christmas is the perfect time to give back in ways that really matter. Because while we’re cozy in our homes with our families, hot chocolates or bubbles in hand, there are people out there who are struggling to stay warm, feed their families, or find a reason to smile.
They say it’s better to give than to receive, and you know what? They’re right (whoever "they" are). Science even backs this up — helping others boosts your happiness levels. It’s like a little serotonin stocking stuffer for your brain. Knowing you’ve made someone’s life a bit brighter is the kind of feel-good that no store-bought gift can match.
Giving back doesn’t mean you need a Scrooge vault full of gold coins. It’s about finding ways, big or small, to share what you can. I’ve got some great ideas for you;
Support your local charities: These groups work tirelessly for others, there are so many incredible organisations doing life-changing work. A bag of groceries or even a small donation can make a massive difference, helping them to help others.
Donate your time: Have you got a few hours to spare? Volunteering is like wrapping yourself as a giant gift, time is incredibly precious and so so valuable to those that receive your kindness…..plus, you’ll meet some incredible people along the way.
Share your genius: Are you a baker? Whip up some Xmas yumminess for a neighbour.
Great at knitting? Make scarves for a shelter. Got a knack for conversation? Visit someone who might be feeling lonely this season.
Declutter and donate: As we dig under the stairs and pull out our xmas decorations, as we move the furniture and re arrange our homes why not have a little purge. Before Santa brings new items, purge your wardrobe, your games cupboard, donate clothes, toys, or household items to someone who can put them to good use. AND please don’t donate rubbish, its not the refuse tip….quality used items only!
When you give back, you’re not just helping others, you’re giving yourself the gift of perspective. It’s a chance to step outside the hustle of holiday shopping and remember what Christmas all is about: connection, kindness, and making the world a little brighter.
So, this year, let’s sprinkle some extra joy around. Whether it’s a small donation to a charity close to your heart or simply smiling at a stranger who looks like they’ve had a long day, every little act counts. And who knows? Your kindness might just inspire someone else to pass it on.
